A very brief Thanksgiving Day History: Thanksgiving is really a harvest festival celebration. The United States observes it annually on the fourth Thursday in November. The first American Thanksgiving likely took place in 1620 in Massachusetts. The American Pilgrims had established the Plymouth Colony (after leaving England on a ship called the Mayflower on September 16th) and, with an agreement called the Mayflower Compact on November 11, 1620, set down rules to govern for the general good of the Colony. The Massachusetts Wampanoag Indian tribe became friends with the Pilgrims and were known to have celebrated the harvest festival with them in the early years. |
