Clue:

1. Study the vocabulary words in the vocabulary word bank to determine the meaning(s) of each prefix.
2. Use the definition, part of speech and “master” Latin root as clues to solve each puzzle.
3. Type or write your answers INSIDE the boxes. At the bottom of the last prefix puzzle, click ” SUBMIT” to get the correct answers and a sentence for each vocabulary word.

Why are these 14 prefixes important? According to Richard E. Hodges of the University of Puget Sound in a booklet titled: “Improving Spelling and Vocabulary in Secondary School” published by the NCTE in 1982; page 30:
“If you were to examine the 20,000 most used English words, you would find that about 5,000 of them contain prefixes and that 82% (about 4,100) of those words use one of only fourteen different prefixes out of all the available prefixes in the language.”

Prefix EX means ” out, out of, former, outside. ”
Below is an alphabetical list using the prefix EX with an indication of a grade level for the prefix ” EX”.

1) An anticipation or wait for something to occur; a prospect of good or bad fortune (noun) Root SPECT = watch, see, look, appear

2) Introduced from another country; strikingly different or unusual (adjective) Root EXO = outside (prefix)

3) A going out or forth; expedition; a usually brief pleasure trip; departure from a direct course (noun) Root CUR = run

4) A sharp or sudden utterance; an outcry; forceful expression of protest or complaint (noun) Root CLAM = declare, call out

5) Inclined to shut out certain persons or classes; catering to a distinct, fashionable class (adjective) Root CLUS = shut, close

6) The act of leaving out from a number or a whole; exclusion; something offered as objection (noun) Root CEPT = take, hold, seize

7) Having wide or considerable range, distance, scope or space (adjective) Root TENS = stretch, strain, reach

8) To outdo others; to surpass (verb) Root CELL = rise high, tower
